On May 16th, 1985, Becca Jean Hughes, mother of seven, was found guilty of first-degree murder for shooting and killing her husband as he tried to choke her to death. When the trial began, the judge announced that he did not want to hear a word about Becca being a "battered woman." She was sentenced to fifty years in prison, no parole. The average murderer in America serves only six years.
