George Palmer Putnam and Hilton Railey orchestrated Amelia Earhart's endorsement for Lucky Strike cigarettes. Featuring a drawing based on one of the photographs from the "Lady Lindy" series, the advertisement was an expeditious way for Earhart, a nonsmoker, to contribute $1,500 to Richard E. Byrd's Antarctica expedition. Byrd had helped catapult Earhart to fame; he served as technical advisor and made all of the arrangements for the Friendship flight. McCall's, which had asked Earhart to be a contributor to the magazine, found the advertisement "unladylike" and rescinded their offer.
