The thirteenth annual steam boat excursion organized by Eureka Lodge 8512 of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, a black fraternal organization and mutual aid society, ended tragically. In addition to the 3,000 legitimate ticket holders, at least 5,000 people with counterfeit tickets stormed the 132nd Street pier in Harlem, creating chaos. Three women were killed in the stampede and at least forty others were injured. The ship eventually proceeded up the Hudson River to Poughkeepsie with at least 1,250 passengers.
