Dismantling the Gaze: Reading through Multiply, Identify, Her

This panel discussion, featuring artists Leah Schrager and Rafia Santana, considers artistic strategies that subvert and disrupt gendered assumptions. The discussion, building on the first session of Dismantling the Gaze and themes in the exhibition, Multiply, Identify, Her, will consider Santana’s and Schrager’s use of hybrid, multiple, and transformed selves.

Speaker Bios

Leah Schrager is an artist who works between the web and NYC. In her work she photographs, appears in, augments, and markets her own image. She’s interested in the line, movement, biography, and digital life of the female body. In 2010 she founded a new form of therapy as Sarah White, The Naked Therapist. She also co-curated the female-positive BodyAnxiety.com exhibition, which is featured in the April 2015 issue of Art Forum. After graduating in 2015 with an MFA in Fine Art from Parsons, The New School, she launched a celebrity-as-art-practice project called ONA. Making herself a real world celebrity has so far involved the creation and growth of her Instagram account, which has over 2 Million followers, the release of her debut album, going on tour, and the planned release of her documentary film, "Instagram Famous."

Rafia Santana is a Brooklyn-based multimedia artist using animated graphics, photography, and music production to bend perception and make jokes.

Marina Chao (moderator) is assistant curator at ICP. Prior to joining the Exhibitions department in 2012, Chao was curatorial assistant in the department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art (New York).
