Nontsikelelo Veleko

(1977) South African

Biography

Nontsikelelo Veleko was born in Bodibe, South Africa, and trained at the Market Photography Workshop in Johannesburg. She uses fashion photography as a means to explore cultural communication and identity allegiance, and more specifically to posit the question of what is considered “black enough” both in South Africa and abroad. Her series Beauty Is in the Eye of the Beholder captures the vibrant fashion culture of Johannesburg and confronts stereotypes of how the young, black, and urban ought to look.
