James Balog

Changing Ice, Changing Climate.

For three decades, James Balog has examined global environmental change. His Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) has provided visual evidence, unprecedented in the history of photography, of how climate change is altering the earth’s polar and alpine landscapes. Since 2007, EIS has gathered more than one million images documenting the retreat of glaciers in the U.S., Antarctica, Austria, Bolivia, Canada, France, Iceland, Greenland, and Nepal. This important work continues indefinitely.

The images on display in our windows along Sixth Avenue and 43rd Street bear witness to the retreat of Mendenhall Glacier, in southeast Alaska, between 2007 and 2014.
