1992 Infinity Award: Applied/Fashion/Advertising — Oliviero Toscani

Oliviero Toscani is the 1992 recipient of the Applied/Fashion/Advertising award

Oliviero Toscani was an Italian photographer, creative director, and visual communicator whose provocative advertising campaigns revolutionized commercial photography and transformed the relationship between advertising, art, and social activism. Best known for his work with United Colors of Benetton, Toscani challenged conventional advertising by replacing product-centered imagery with photographs addressing controversial social and political issues, including racism, war, HIV/AIDS, religion, capital punishment, immigration, and discrimination. His work blurred the boundaries between documentary photography, conceptual art, and commercial communication, making him one of the most influential and controversial photographers of the late twentieth century.
