Learn about Japanese tradition through this hands-on workshop for families, led by interdisciplinary artist, Aiko Wakao Austin, and explore our current exhibition, 'm So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now.
This program takes place in ICP’s cafe and is free to attend. Come early or stay after to explore our current exhibition, I’m So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now. Kids 14 and under receive free admission to ICP’s museum.
Families with children ages 4 and up of all abilities are welcome. Parents and guardians must remain with their children during the activity.
This Family Art Hour is co-presented with Japan Society.
About the Artist
. 
Aiko Wakao Austin is an interdisciplinary artist whose multicultural upbringing informs her exploration of identity, family, and cultural memory. Born in Tokyo and raised in Italy, she received a B.A. in International Relations from Brown University. After graduation, she worked in Japan as a journalist for Bloomberg and Reuters, and later in finance at Goldman Sachs.
Austin moved to New York in 2016 and began photographing professionally. Her latest project, “what we inherit,” presents work created using kimonos and photographs she inherited from her family. The series has been recognized internationally, including Top 10 Winner of LensCulture Critics’ Choice, Photolucida’s Critical Mass Top 50 and FRESH KLOMPCHING Edition, and featured in public art exhibitions such as Photoville and the Griffin Museum. She currently lives and works in New York.
