Hosted by Joseph Maida

Taking the hegemonic male gaze of twentieth-century American photography as his prompt, Joseph Maida will re-evaluate Gary Winogrand’s renowned 1970s public street photographs Women Are Beautiful—included in the Public, Private, Secret exhibition—as well as Lee Friedlander’s private nudes of women in domestic spaces made around the same time. Maida will introduce and discuss his newest series, A Third Look, to reconsider these masters’ photographs as provocative opportunities to address past gender binaries and hierarchies in the wake of the contemporary feminist, multicultural, and queer perspectives.
