The former mayor of San Salvador, Duarte was elected president in 1972, but was forced into exile by the military. A member of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC), he returned to El Salvador in 1979 and joined the junta, of which he later became president. The far-right ARENA party gained power in the 1982 elections, forcing Duarte from office.
