During the Civil War, the press portrayed Jefferson Davis as a devil, a murderer, and a
thief. When Davis left Richmond on May 2, he supposedly absconded with gold from the Confederate capital’s banks. Here, Davis is shown holding a $100,000 bag of gold as he flees.
