2001 Infinity Award: Publication
Unclassified/A Walker Evans Anthology presents a selection of materials from the Walker Evans archive, a vast collection of papers and negatives acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1994 from the artist’s estate. Conceived and designed by Jeff Rosenheim, Assistant Curator, and co-authored by Douglas Eklund, Research Associate in the Department of Photographs, the book was published by Scalo in 2000. Over a period of five years, Rosenheim and Eklund studied and catalogued the archive while overseeing the conservation of thousands of objects. Many items in the book are published for the first time, including photographs, pages from family albums, manuscripts, lists, literary sketches and letters.
Juror Mark Haworth-Booth said, “This is a fascinating insight into the mind and art of one of the greatest and most influential photographers of all time…The book illuminates not only Evans himself, but also the creative process.”
