Images produced and controlled by African Americans under segregation generally took pains to present the strongest possible contrast to the ubiquitous negative caricatures and stereotypes found in American mass media. Given the close involvement of both Wright and Cayton, the FSA Bronzeville coverage is an example of photography deployed in the service of social inquiry rather than racial prejudice and substantially shaped by African American perspectives.
