ICP Executive Director Mark Lubell to Step Down

After nearly eight years as Executive Director of the International Center of Photography (ICP), Mark Lubell has made the decision to step down, effective August 31, 2021.

Under Lubell’s leadership, ICP reunified its school and museum at 79 Essex Street on the Lower East Side, which opened in January 2020. During his tenure, ICP launched breakthrough exhibitions, expanded the school’s online offerings, and continued its commitment to community and public programs.

“It has been a great privilege to be a part of such an important organization during this pivotal period. I am grateful for the incredible work of our staff, our faculty and our students, and for the commitment from the Board of Trustees. I look forward to the important and engaging exhibitions and the visual authorship from the students in the years to come,” said Lubell.

Board President Jeffrey Rosen said, “Board Chair Caryl Englander and I and all of the Trustees are deeply appreciative of Mark’s passionate and committed leadership of ICP. In addition to the relocation to Essex Street, he helped navigate ICP successfully through the disruptions of the pandemic and a pivot to online programs to sustain our activities. He steps down with ICP in a strong position to realize its mission of concerned photography. We are grateful that he will remain in his role until August 31 to facilitate a smooth transition to his successor.”

ICP’s Board of Trustees has retained ZRG Partners—which has years of experience in the arts, cultural, and education sectors—to assist in the search for a successor to Lubell. Nat Sutton and Diane Charness will be leading the search on behalf of ZRG.
