Eva Leitolf (b. 1966, Würzburg, Germany) is a German photographer and visual artist whose early career was shaped by a strong interest in documentary photography and the social role of images. Before becoming internationally recognized for her conceptual projects addressing migration, racism, and colonialism, Leitolf developed her photographic practice through both academic training and editorial work.
From 1986 to 1994, she studied Communication Design with a specialization in Photography at the University of Essen (then Universität-Gesamthochschule Essen), where she acquired a foundation in documentary photography and visual communication. During this period, Germany was experiencing profound political and social changes following reunification, including an increase in xenophobic violence. These events significantly influenced Leitolf's early artistic concerns and became the basis of her diploma project, in which she examined how photography and the media construct public perceptions of racist violence.
Beginning in 1989, while still a student, Leitolf worked as a freelance photographer for Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, one of Germany's leading illustrated magazines. She remained with the publication until 1997, producing editorial assignments while also developing independent documentary work. This professional experience strengthened her documentary approach and provided opportunities to investigate social issues beyond conventional photojournalism.
