Meet ICP at THE POINT and Teen Academy alumnus Roy Baizan.
Nov 19, 2015

In the spirit of #GivingTuesday (December 1st), ICP is spotlighting a few of our Community Programs alumni. Please join us in celebrating #GivingTuesday by sharing these posts, and consider donating to support our award-winning programs for young photographers.

Roy Baizan began taking classes at ICP at THE POINT in the fall of 2014, and later joined ICP’s Teen Academy program. He is now a student at BMCC and continues to stay involved with ICP as a staff member in Community Programs.

Roy discusses his experience at ICP and the intentions behind his personal work:

My time at ICP at THE POINT not only taught me about photography—it also taught me the importance of community. I documented my time as a TA at ICP at THE POINT, including some of the youth in the South Bronx because I believe that the future of communities like Hunts Point is being built by the youth. My work challenges negative misconceptions of the community by documenting and sharing my own personal experiences. Being a photographer in the Bronx, I feel like I have a responsibility to show and represent a side that is often overlooked by popular media because it is often not newsworthy. I try to show solutions to problems instead of revisiting the problems that people are already familiar with.

See below for a sample of Roy’s photography, currently on view in the Vantage Point 23: Bronx Eyes exhibition at THE POINT. To view more of Roy’s work, follow him @roybaizan on Instagram.
