Fraternal organizations and lodges were popular among African American men-and women-in the early twentieth century. The three linked rings on the badge of this sitter identify him as a member of the Odd Fellows, in this case the African American branch-the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows (GUOOF)-which favored militaristic uniforms. Fasnacht was listed in the 1900 U.S. census as a photographer in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
