This family portrait shows a group of seven children, ordered in a line by height, with their mother or another older female relative on the right. The family is desperately poor-the children wear ill-fitting garments and the house is a sturdy but dilapidated cabin, already a relic at the time of this photograph. At least one other photographer posed the same family in front of this cabin, emphasizing the suitability of the view as a stereotypical representation of the old South.
