This photograph by the Jacksonville, Florida, photographer John S. Mitchell of a young boy posed on what appears to be a stuffed alligator engages a widespread and particularly vicious trope of American racist humor. Although untitled, it is part of a vast range of drawings and photographs of black children with the title "Gator Bait."
