This stereograph of an elderly couple by Savannah, Georgia, photographer O. Pierre Havens is an example of the use of a studio portrait as a form of cultural tourism. The couple is presented as a local marvel, meriting a portrait only because of their advanced age. Their tattered clothes reflect the economic condition of many black Southerners, as well as adhere to white conceptions of individual blacks as quaint objects for exhibition. Like many of the Southern views, this image sentimentalizes black poverty and inequality, and presents its subjects as objects of curiosity.
