Two handwritten notes on the back of this image, both signed "S.C.," indicate that this portrait of a vacationing family was taken at Green Cove-no doubt, Green Cove Springs, Florida (see also 469.1990)-and sent along to friends in Alexandria, Virginia. The family's itinerary followed a northbound route up the Atlantic seaboard, and included Savannah and Charleston. The young black boy with his arm wrapped around a tree may be their domestic servant or, more plausibly, a worker at their hotel.
