Mark Ryder (1921-2006), a pioneer in American modern dance, had been trained and mentored by Martha Graham. In the early 1950s, when this photograph was taken, he formed the Dance Drama Duo with his first wife, Emily Frankel (b. 1922); they toured extensively and premiered cutting-edge work by new and emerging choreographers.
