Biography

Henry T. Anthony, along with his brother, Edward Anthony, made an important contribution to the field of photography as the owners of the largest nineteenth-century manufacturer of cameras and photographic supplies in the world, E. & H. T. Anthony. Henry Anthony was born in New York in 1814 and trained as a civil engineer at Columbia University. After working on the Croton Aqueduct and clerking for the Bank of New York, he joined his brother’s business in 1852. Anthony’s focus was on developing new advances in paper printing processes and overseeing the company’s publishing ventures including their influential annual paper, the Bulletin of Photographic Invention and Improvement.
