2002 Infinity Award: Special Presentation
In 2002, the Infinity Awards featured a Special Presentation to The New York Times “Portraits of Grief”
The New York Times began running the “Portraits of Grief” column on September 15, 2001, four days after the attack on the World Trade Center. Originating on the Metro Desk and involving the entire newspaper, these portraits of the missing and dead offer a glimpse into the lives of those who perished. More than 2000 of these portraits were published. Thousands of photographs were gathered from family and friends of those who were lost on 9/11 with the express purpose of showing a portrait with each profile. “Portraits of Grief” has shown the human cost of this tragedy and has opened an ongoing dialogue between The New York Times and its readership.
