2002 Infinity Award: Publication
Kiosk: A History of Photojournalism by Robert Lebeck and Bodo von Dewitz accompanies an exhibition organized by the Ludwig Museum in Köln. Drawing on the collection of historic magazines assembled by Robert Lebeck, Kiosk traces the development of photographic journalism from 1839 to 1973. Included are some of the most interesting and important photo stories from publications including the Illustrated London News, the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, USSR in Construction, VU, Life, and Look. Sumptuously reproduced, these full-page spreads show the original layouts in which the photographs, many of which we know so well, first reached a wide public.
Lebeck worked as a photojournalist for the German news weekly Stern, interrupted only by a period when he served as editor-in-chief of Geo. Bodo von Dewitz, has been the chief curator of the Agfa Foto-Historama Collection at the Museum Ludwig Köln since 1985. He is the editor and writer of Kiosk: A History of Photojournalism, which was published in by Steidl, Göttingen, Germany.
