2015 Infinity Award: Art
A professional photographer for more than 55 years, Larry Fink has had one-man shows at New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of Modern Art amongst others. On the European continent, Fink has had one-man shows at the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi, Belgium. In the last three years, he had a traveling retrospective shown in six different Spanish museums. He was awarded the "Best of Show" for an exhibition curated by Christian Caujolle at the Arles Photography Festival in France. He has also been represented in countless group shows. Fink has been awarded two John Simon Guggenheim Fellowships, two National Endowment for the Arts, and two Individual Photography Fellowships. He has been teaching for more than 52 years, with professorial positions at Yale University, Bard College, and Cooper Union, among others.
Fink's first monograph, the seminal Social Graces (Aperture, 1984) left a lasting impression in the photographic community. He has since published 12 other monographs that explore similar subject matter. His most recent published books The Beats (Artiere/powerhouse) and Larry Fink on Composition and Improvisation (Aperture) were on several "Best Of" lists of the year. As an editorial photographer, he has worked for various publications such as The New Yorker and Vanity Fair.
He is currently working on a massive retrospective book to be published by the University of Texas Press. Grafiche dell’Artiere in Bologna will make the exquisite prints for the book.
