2012 Infinity Award: Photojournalism

Benjamin Lowy was born in 1979 in New York and began his career covering the Iraq War in 2003. He is currently represented by Reportage by Getty Images. In 2011 his Iraq | Perspectives work was selected by William Eggleston to win the Duke University Center for Documentary Studies/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography and he was recently awarded the Magnum Foundation Emergency fund to continue work in Libya. In 2004, Lowy attended the World Press Joop Swart Masterclass, he was named in Photo District News' 30, and his images of Iraq were chosen by PDN as some of the most iconic of the 21st Century. His work from Iraq, Darfur, and Afghanistan has been collected by several galleries and exhibited by Tate Modern, SF MOMA, Houston Center for Photography, Invalides, and Les Rencontres d'Arles. His work from Darfur also appeared in the SAVE DARFUR media campaign. His numerous honors include awards from World Press Photo, POYi, PDN, Communication Arts, American Photography, and the Society for Publication Design. He was a finalist for the Oskar Barnak Award and Critical Mass and included in Magenta Flash Forward (2007) and the Open Society Foundations' Moving Walls 16 exhibition. Lowy earned a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. He lives in New York City with his wife, photographer Marvi Lacar, their sons Mateo and Kaleb, and two dogs.
