The Places You’ll Go: Forging New Career Paths with a Photo Education

The photographic career extends far beyond the act of making an image. In a time when traditional ways of earning a living in photography become less certain, the question of how to make a contribution, build a career and follow one’s love of photography and visual communication becomes more relevant. This panel discussion moderated by James Estrin of the New York Times, explores different careers open to people with a photographic education. The conversation features ICP Alumni who have founded tech companies, served as editors for the worlds leading news publications, have been educators, built studios and creative agencies and directed programs for a prominent foundation championing in-depth, independent photography.

Bios

James Estrin is a Senior Staff Photographer for the New York Times. He is also a founder of Lens, the Times's photography blog and co-edits it with David Gonzalez. Mr. Estrin has worked for the Times since 1987 and was part of a Pulitzer Prize winning team in 2001. Mr. Estrin is an adjunct professor at the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism. He also teaches at the School of Visual Arts Masters Program in Digital Photography in New York. He attended Hampshire College and the graduate program at the International Center of Photography.

Emma Raynes runs programs at the Magnum Foundation and teaches at the International Center of Photography. Raynes earned a BA in Art History from Bowdoin College and an MA in Cultural Anthropology from the New School for Social Research. She holds certificates in Photography and Documentary Studies from the International Center of Photography and Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies and was resident curator at the UnionDocs Center for Documentary Art. Raynes is the recipient of several awards for research and photography, including a Surdna Fellowship and a Lewis Hine Documentary Fellowship from Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies.

Julien Jourdes is Co-Founder & COO of BLINK, a real-time location platform for media companies and professionals. Julien draws on his previous experience as the World News Photo Editor at the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek and Editorial Director of Magnum Paris during the conflict in Iraq. He is a founding member of Fovea, and earned dual degrees in Photography and Photojournalism from L'Ecole Nationale Supérieure Louis Lumière in Paris and the International Center of Photography in NYC.

Benoit Lagarde is the co-founder and principal at Splashlight, a production studio based in New York City, Miami and Montreal. Splashlight offers photo and video production, digital services and studio services for top fashion brands and retailers. Benoit’s creative vision has been integral to Splashlight’s growth into a multi-million dollar corporation over a period of 10 years. Trained as a professional photographer, Benoit studied at the International Center for Photography in New York where he is now a member of the President’s Council.
