The Joannie M. Chen Fund for Education
Joannie M. Chen was a young, gifted photographer who brought boundless energy to her lifelong passion, photography. She dedicated most of her career to inspiring others through her visual interpretations of humanity and its life journeys. Even after her diagnosis of leukemia in September 2004, Joannie sought solace in her art, documenting the tribulations of a cancer patient through her own self-portraits. Although her project remains unfinished, her courage to enlighten others through her own struggle remains in these photos. On December 5, 2006, after a two-year battle with her illness, Joannie passed away. She leaves behind family and friends who remember her most for her selfless love, playfulness, and immense generosity.
To honor her spirit and humanity, Joannie's family and friends have created The Joannie M. Chen Fund for Education at ICP, a tribute to her enduring aspirations in the photographic arts. It embodies her vision and desire to encourage others to interpret the world they live in by using the communicative power of photography for self-expression.

All contributions made to The Joannie M. Chen Fund will support photographic education at ICP. With assistance from generous donors, ICP's educational programs provide opportunities to youth from underserved communities. ICP also offers a variety of resources to emerging photographers of every age and from all backgrounds. Joannie's Fund will help foster self-esteem and empower young students, as well as nurture more established photographers transitioning into a professional career. The goal is to raise enough to create a permanent endowment in Joannie's name so that her legacy is carried on in perpetuity.
