The General Studies Curriculum
The year is divided into fall, winter, and spring ten-week terms, with intensive five-day workshops in January. In the Fall and Winter terms students register for five courses and a series of weekend workshops. In the Spring term internships, courses, and workshops are matched with increased time for photographing and producing final projects. Requirements for the academic year include three terms of the General Studies Seminar, two terms of photographic history (nineteenth- and twentieth-century), two terms of Digital Techniques, two terms of advanced black-and-white or color printing, and instruction in the use of medium and large format photography.
Students select, in consultation with their program faculty, additional courses and workshop electives each term. The curriculum includes special courses designed exclusively for the General Studies Program in addition to the many classes offered in the ICP Programs Guide. These creative and technical offerings allow students to identify a sequence of instruction that will strengthen their skills and vision.
Throughout the year, students meet individually with their program chair to discuss and evaluate their ongoing projects. Critical reviews of work at the end of each term help to identify each student's strengths and weaknesses. The program culminates with a final exhibition in the gallery of the School of the International Center of Photography, allowing students to address issues of context, presentation, and installation of their work.
