During field trips and shooting assignments, students will expand their understanding of the technical and aesthetic possibilities of photography. Students will also discuss the work of historical and contemporary photographers. The curriculum includes darkroom time, slide lectures, assignments, critiques, a photographic fieldtrip, and guest artist visit. By the end of the course, students will have developed a portfolio of prints and an artist’s statement. The course will culminate in a final presentation for family and friends.

Photography II in Black-and-White: The Sound I Saw
TA4 | January 24–March 28 | Sunday | 3:00–6:00 pm | M. Wesley Ham | $700 + $55 fee

As borrowed from the title of photographer, Roy DeCarava’s seminal book on jazz, The Sound I Saw, students in this class will create their own body of work photographing sound. How do we see sound, and how can we best express that sound in an image? From subway musicians to children at play, our daily lives are filled with remarkably diverse sounds of expression and emotions. Whether documenting a friend’s band, conversations among neighbors on their stoop, fans watching a game at school, street noise at rush hour, or the sound of rain falling, students will develop a portfolio of work and artist’s statement that express the most magnetic sounds to them. The curriculum includes darkroom time, slide lectures, assignments, critiques, a photographic fieldtrip, and guest artist visit. The course will culminate in a final presentation for family and friends.

Prerequisite Photo I as approved by Community Programs staff.

Teen Academy Scholarships are available. If you are in need of financial assistance, download a scholarship application.
