In Come! Come!, Wang Qingsong examines the implications of China's rapid social transformation with a mock demonstration staged on the dried-up bed of the Grand Canal outside Beijing. In the left-hand panel, protestors carry signs bearing slogans from past political campaigns, ranging from denunciations of the West during the Opium War to socialist-era slogans promoting nation-building. As the demonstrators march away in the right-hand panel, we see that the reverse side of their placards bear advertising slogans promoting the consumer products, both foreign and domestic, that are now encountered everywhere in China. In the middle panel, an image of the debris the protestors have left behind implies that the downside of China's transition has yet to be calculated. As usual, Wang places himself in the scene as a participant-observer. He trails behind the consumer-demonstrators at right, next to a small blackand- white sign that reads "Art Forever."
