Using both new and recycled parts, Clifford Ross invented a camera that is unrivaled in its ability to render hyper-acute detail. The R1 (R is for Ross) can bring into razor-sharp focus minutiae located up to seven miles away. Ross’s aim is to make landscape photographs that achieve the highest possible “reality quotient,” conveying to viewers the palpable specificity of the moment depicted. He finds this approach integral to communicating his own sense of awe when contemplating natural scenes. Ross’s photographs recall the idealized landscapes of the nineteenth-century painting, but they also reflect a distinctly twenty-first-century passion: the desire to experience life with absolute immediacy on a monumental scale.
