Students come to the International Center of Photography from around the world to study photography in ICP's full-time certificate and ICP–Bard MFA programs. For many prospective ICP students, the cost of living and attending school full-time in New York is prohibitive.
General Studies and Photojournalism/Documentary Photography Certificate Programs
ICP's two full-time certificate programs in General Studies and in Photojournalism/Documentary Photography offer students an advanced photographic education, and the tools to begin their photography careers. For one year, students are instructed by ICP's world-class faculty, and have access to extensive darkroom and digital facilities—the best available, anywhere.
Alumni of the program have gone on to work for noted photographers, to publish photographs in the leading newspapers and magazines, to gain representation by top galleries, and to join photo agencies with placements around the world. Read about alumni accomplishments.
The General Studies program:
- Offers an advanced visual studies curriculum to approximately 40 international students per year; fifteen countries are represented in 2006
- Provides instruction in the craft and theory of contemporary image making, shaped by the experience of practicing artists, photographers, writers, historians, and visual artists of all media
- Is chaired by Robert Blake, a photographer, Emmy-winning videographer, curator, and author
The Photojournalism/Documentary Photography program:
- Provides 20 students each year with practical skills and training in both traditional and nontraditional approaches to photojournalism, while inspiring and pushing them to experiment and grow artistically
- Includes courses in the history of photojournalism, technical training, the editorial process, and other related subjects through intensive weekend workshops and ten-week courses
- Is chaired by Alison Morley, former photo editor for the Sophisticated Traveler Magazine of The New York Times
Both programs:
- Feature distinguished rosters of renowned artists, photojournalists, documentarians, and editors as lecturers and teachers
- Provide real career placement opportunities through Career Day, attended by major gallerists, photo editors, agencies, and publications
- Culminate in a final exhibition of student work and a publication
How you can help:
- Provide general scholarship funds to be distributed to deserving students at mid-year to defray the cost of tuition, materials, or the production of a final project
- Underwrite named scholarship support for an individual student to cover partial- or full-year tuition
- Create a named endowment to assist in scholarship support in perpetuity
