MARY ELLEN MARK, who passed away on May 25, 2015, achieved worldwide visibility through her numerous books, exhibitions, and editorial magazine work.  She has published photo-essays and portraits in such publications as the New Yorker, LIFE, and New York Times Magazine. She is recognized as one of our most respected and influential photographers.

During her career, Mary Ellen received the Cornell Capa Award, the Infinity Award for Journalism, an Erna & Victor Hasselblad Foundation Grant, and a Walter Annenberg Grant among others.

Mary Ellen was involved in the ICP School for decades. She held master classes, gave lectures, and hosted many ICP grads as interns and assistants in her studio. In numerous ways, she was a valued member of our school community. In her choice of subject matter, she chose the important but not the obvious; she balanced specificity and timelessness, drama and hope. Her phenomenal commitment to her craft and to the stories she told, and the fact that she revisited her subjects for many years, are a testament to her deep humanism. These are values that Mary Ellen shared with the ICP School and that we strive to foster in our students.

As much as possible, we want to be able to eliminate the barriers for talented artists who want to come and learn with us and be a part of our community. That’s why we’re very pleased and proud to announce the creation of the Mary Ellen Mark Memorial Scholarship. We want to ensure that Mary Ellen’s legacy lives on and that people who are willing to make the commitment to telling these important stories have the skills and resources to do so.

Please support our students by making a generous donation to the Mary Ellen Mark Memorial Scholarship.
