In conjunction with the Sebastião Salgado: Genesis exhibition, the International Center of Photography announces an ambitious lineup of panel discussions, lectures, and film screenings addressing the urgent issue of climate change. Events kick off on September 19 with a lecture by James Balog, photographer and founder of the Extreme Ice Survey. On September 20, we present renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado discussing his Genesis project in a lecture at Cooper Union’s Great Hall, We then continue with “Green Mondays”—a series of lectures and conversations held in the galleries— that will feature scientists, activists, photographers, and others who will explain the science behind climate change and address critical topics such as fracking, greening the economy, and decarbonizing the city. Programming will also include Friday evening gallery tours with climate scientists, who will contextualize Salgado’s photographs, region by region. Sebastião Salgado: Genesis is an eight-year worldwide survey on global issues. The exhibition draws together more than 200 spectacular black-and-white photographs of wildlife, landscapes, seascapes, and indigenous peoples—raising public awareness about the pressing issues of environment and climate change.
