A Durable Memento: Portraits by Augustus Washington, African American Daguerreotypist
JUNE 24–SEPTEMBER 24, 2000
A Durable Memento is the first comprehensive exhibition of the work of Augustus Washington. The exhibition of daguerreotype portraits are visual documents of African American history, providing information from two distinct periods: Washington's tenure in Hartford, Connecticut and the early years of his residency in Liberia in the 1800s. Curated by Ann Shumard, Assistant Curator of Photographs.
