Carrie Mae Weems: The Hampton Project
JANUARY 27–APRIL 1, 2001
The Hampton Project brings together the work of Carrie Mae Weems and Frances B. Johnston. The exhibition explores issues of race as brought to light through the work of two extraordinary women artists separated by 100 years. In this dramatic installation, Weems reinterprets Johnston's turn-of-the-century photographs of the Hampton Institute, the first school for both African American and Native American youths.
