ICP announced the discovery of a cache of over 3,500 negatives of the Spanish Civil War by Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, and David Seymour ("Chim"), three of the leading war photographers of the twentieth century. The negatives, made between 1936 and 1939, include some of the most significant war photographs ever made.
The materials, which became known collectively as the "The Mexican Suitcase," are actually contained in three small cardboard boxes of about 100 individual rolls of film, as well as some short strips of negatives.
ICP is about to begin the formal process of unraveling and conserving the rolls of negatives, and will make a digital copy of each frame so that curators can analyze the content. ICP hopes at some point to create an exhibition and publication with its discoveries, and to make the material accessible to visiting scholars and online.
