1987 Infinity Award: Art
Robert Rauschenberg is the 1987 recipient of the Art award
Though best known as a painter, Robert Rauschenberg also worked with photography throughout his career. His diverse photographic art included black-and-white prints, Polaroids, collages, and his "Combines," which melded sculpture, photography, and painting.
Rauschenberg studied photography at Black Mountain College with John Cage, Josef Albers, Beaumont Newhall, Harry Callahan, and Aaron Siskind. His approach to the medium prioritized vision over technical acumen—the eye more than the hand. Rauschenberg photographed himself and his friends and lovers as well as scenes for use in Combines and collages.
