ICP acquired an extraordinary trove of 4,000 glass-plate Martin Munkacsi negatives, covering the most productive years of the photographer's career, 1927-1944. Included are early photojournalistic images, and later Hollywood work (portraits of Katherine Hepburn, Fred Astaire, et.al.). Considered lost for years, then rediscovered as a result of ICP's Winter 2007 exhibition Martin Munkacsi: Think While You Shoot!, ICP was fortunate to make the acquisition with the cooperation of his daughter, Joan Munkacsi. Through a generous grant from a foundation, ICP will clean, inventory and re-house the negatives, which should prove to be a rich source of information for scholars for years to come.
