ICP Alumni of the One-Year Certificate Programs gather to discuss their cross-disciplinary artistic practices.

Infusing cross-disciplinary artistic practices like media, sound, and installation into a photographic project can add layers to the storytelling and nuanced impact to the experience of looking. Join ICP Faculty Gaia Squarci alongside two ICP alumni, Rehab Eldalil (DOC' 21) and Ana Vallejo (New Media Narratives '20) for an evening exploring their recent projects that cross photographic storytelling with other artistic mediums and strategies.

Rehab Eldalil will discuss the use of embroidery, poetry, sound, and photography in their multi-year project “The Longing Of The Stranger Whose Path Has Been Broken” which explores their estranged ancestry and connection with the Bedouin community of St. Catherine in South Sinai, Egypt. Ana Vallejo will share work from “Neuromantic,” a layered project that deploys neuroscience, data visualization, psychology, and image-making to examine the deep impact of dysfunctional relationships and trauma.

Gaia is a photo editor and writer at Blind Magazine, member of Prospekt, IWMF fellow and National Geographic grantee. With a background in Art History and Photojournalism, she leans toward a personal approach that moves away from the descriptive narrative tradition in documentary photography and video. Her work is focused on the relationship between human beings and the environment, family relationships and domestic violence. POYi awarded her cinematography and photography respectively in 2014 and 2017. Clients include the New York Times, the New Yorker, the Washington Post, Internazionale, D di Repubblica among others. Ana Vallejo (@anacvallejo) is a conceptual documentary photographer from Colombia based in New York. She has a background in biology and is fascinated with the brain, human consciousness, and its ability to expand and transform. Her visual projects are research-based and experimental. They invite chance and collaboration to delve into human perception, memory, and emotions. Vallejo is interested in marginal spaces; that which resides outside of the status quo and is often excluded by society and defined by a rigid stigma. Growing up with a schizophrenic father, in an anxious family system, and in a country that has normalized war and violence, Vallejo feels drawn to how trauma affects human emotions, mental health, and relationships - and the potential that art and social bonds offer to heal and transcend. Vallejo graduated from the New Media Narratives program at the International Center of Photography in NYC as a recipient of the Mary Ellen Mark Memorial Scholarship and a Director’s Fellowship. Her work has been exhibited in festivals and venues like Photo Vogue Festival (Milan), PH Museum Days (Italy), Currents New Media Festival (Santa Fe, California), Month of Photography in Los Angeles, Lens Culture Emerging Talent (NY) and Foam (Amsterdam). In 2021 Vallejo was selected for the Foam Talent Award, received the Excellence in Multimedia Storytelling award by Center Santa Fe, and earned the 1st prize of The PH Museum Women Photographers Grant.
