Introducing the ICP Book Club!
Want to meet art and photography lovers who share your passion for novels? Join us for the launch of the ICP Book Club! Each exhibition cycle we will select a novel related to exhibition topics and host a meet-up for readers at the museum.

This season, our pick is Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee. We will host a walkthrough of the Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life exhibition and discuss the novel in the museum café with guest moderator Sarah Coleman.

Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee
This Nobel Prize-winning novel expands on our Rise and Fall of Apartheid exhibition on view through January 6, 2013. Our guided discussion of the book will examine the legacy of apartheid and how it penetrated even the most mundane aspects of society in South Africa.

Set in post-apartheid South Africa, Coetzee's novel tells the story of David Lurie, a professor of Communication and Romantic Poetry at Cape Technical University who believes he has created a comfortable, if somewhat passionless, life for himself. Though his position at the university has been reduced, he teaches his classes dutifully and is happy. When Lurie seduces one of his students, he sets in motion a chain of events that shatters his complacency and leaves him disgraced. His downfall dramatizes the plight of a country caught in the chaotic aftermath of centuries of racial oppression. (Description courtesy of the publisher Penguin)
