The man in this photograph, taken by John Morgan of Concord, New Hampshire, is almost certainly a servant of the little girl's family. Very few African Americans lived in New Hampshire in the nineteenth century, but the few who did enjoyed rights which few other states would grant them; in 1860, New Hampshire was one of only five states in which blacks could vote.
