"Miss Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan are pictured at the airport here [Dakar, Senegal] as they studied a map of the route over the jungle to Niamey, French West Africa [now Niger], 1,275 miles east of this point. Miss Earhart set her fleet twin-motored Lockheed Electra down on Dakar airport on June 8, the day after she landed at St. Louis, 163 miles north, following a flight across the South Atlantic from Natal, Brazil. She and Captain Noonan are making a leisurely flight around the world at its 'waist.'"
