Wilbur Bynon Knies, a coal miner's son from Lansford, Pennsylvania, was a soldier with the American Expeditionary Forces. He was one of over one million U.S. troops stationed in France under the command of General John J. Pershing who fought alongside French and British allied forces against the Germans. Knies's photo-filled notebook juxtaposes images from the war (cannons and ruined buildings) with family scenes.
