Bhupendra Karia (1936-1994) never set out to be a photographer–first he was an artist, a theorist and world traveler. Once he shifted his primary medium to photography, he continuously defined and redefined himself as a photographer, and Karia became a savvy observer of artistic, cultural and social forces of his time. He informed his photography with the formal rigor of the artist and designer’s mind, the concern of a humanist social theorist’s heart, and the discerning eye of a seasoned curator. Ultimately his photographic journey, both literal and figurative, would lead him to distill twenty years of photographs comprising hundreds of thousands of images into a portfolio of 50 masterfully crafted prints that he felt epitomized his oeuvre and his unique view of India.
Bhupendra Karia worked with Cornell Capa, his mentor and friend, in establishing the International Center for Photography in New York. Karia held many positions at ICP including Curator, Director of Special Projects, and Associate Director. He published over 15 titles and curated over 45 exhibitions.
Speaker Bio:
Paul Sternberger is an Associate Professor of Art History at Rutgers University-Newark. Specializing in the History of Photography, the History of Design, and American Art, his publications include Between Amateur and Aesthete: The Legitimization of Photography in America, 1880-1900 (The University of New Mexico Press, 2001) and articles in journals such as American Art, Photographies, The Journal of the History of Collections, and The Woman's Art Journal. Collaborating with Rutgers-Newark colleague Ned Drew, Dr. Sternberger published By Its Cover: Modern American Book Cover Design (Princeton Architectural Press, 2005), Purity of Aim: The Book Jackets of Alvin Lustig (Rochester Institute of Technology Cary Graphic Arts Press, 2010), and George Giusti: The Idea is the Heart of the Matter (Rochester Institute of Technology Press, forthcoming Spring 2016). He also co-curated the groundbreaking exhibition India: Public Places, Private Spaces– Contemporary Photography and Video Art with an accompanying catalog published by Marg Publications in 2007.
