In 2003 the International Center of Photography joined with Steidl Publishers of Göttingen, Germany to launch the innovative photography imprint ICP/Steidl, a unique partnership between photography's leading museum and a renowned art book publisher. ICP/Steidl books combine the exceptional publishing history of world-renowned Steidl Publishers, serving here as both publisher and printer, with the strength of ICP's collections, exhibitions, and curatorial staff-to create original photography books available to a worldwide audience. "ICP and Steidl together have given a new face to photography books, combining ICP's groundbreaking programs with Steidl's extraordinary craftsmanship," said ICP Director Willis E. Hartshorn. "This museum is truly fortunate to have Gerhard Steidl as its partner."
The partnership began with the exhibition catalogue Strangers: The First ICP Triennial of Photography and Video and the artist's book Encounters with the Dani by Susan Meiselas. It continued with the exhibition catalogues Gustav Klutsis and Valentina Kulagina: Photography and Montage After Constructivism; Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China; the artist's monograph Liu Zheng: The Chinese, which was chosen by American Photo as one of the top ten photo books of 2004; JFK for President: Photographs by Cornell Capa; and Ralph Eugene Meatyard, the most comprehensive publication of the artist's work to date.
Recent ICP/Steidl titles include Young America: The Daguerreotypes of Southworth & Hawes (June 2005), a catalogue raisonné of all known works (over 2,000 images) by the photographers that accompanied an exhibition of the same name jointly organized by ICP and the George Eastman House and Modernist Photography: The Daniel Cowin Collection at ICP (September 2004), the first in an ongoing ICP/Steidl series generated from the collections of the ICP archives that will explore in depth the work of an individual artist, movement, or genre in photography.
All titles are available from the ICP Museum Store.
